Caption: Root-knot galls (swellings) on a sugar beet (Beta vulgaris). These galls are caused by the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne sp.) larvae, which live in and feed on the root tissue. The presence of the nematode decreases the uptake of water and nutrients by the plant, leading to stunting and reduction of yield.
