Caption: Brewer's yeast. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cells of brewer's or baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). This fungus consists of single vegetative cells. A daughter cell can be seen budding off one of the larger mother cells. Once it has reached its full size, the daughter cell will be indistinguishable from its mother cell. S. cerevisiae ferments sugar, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide in the process. It is used in the production of beer, wine and bread. Magnification: x7350 when printed 10cm wide.
