Caption: Mycorrhizal fungus. Coloured light micrograph (LM) of a fungus (small, red) growing within the cells of the root cortex of an orchid tree. This results in mycorrhizal roots, which can take up nutrients more efficiently than uninfected roots, while the fungus obtains carbohydrates from the tree. This type of symbiosis (mutualism), where the fungus grows mainly within the root, is known as an endotrophic mycorrhiza and the host plant will not grow properly unless the appropriate fungus is present.
