Caption: Bering Strait, satellite image. North is at top. Clouds, snow and ice are white. Land is brown and the sea is blue, revealed by the melting of the ice and snow cover during the Arctic summer. The Bering Strait is the area of sea between Russia (left) and Alaska, USA (right). The areas seen here include St Lawrence Island (lower centre), the Seward Peninsula (centre right) and Cape Dezhnev on the Chukchi Peninsula (centre left). To the north is the mostly ice-bound Chukchi Sea. To the south is the Bering Sea. This image, which is hundreds of kilometres across, was obtained at 23:15 UTC on 3 June 2002, by NASA's Terra satellite.
