Caption: Alluvial fan and fields, satellite image. North is at top. This area is in the south-eastern part of Fars Province in southern Iran. The fields are the green rectangles irrigated by canals and wells from the seasonal and ephemeral rivers that flow down here, both overground and underground, from the Zagros Mountains (lower left). An alluvial fan has formed on the valley floor at upper left. A mountain ridge road runs along the edge of the fields from top left to lower right. This image, around 50 kilometres across, was obtained by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA's Terra satellite, on 12 October 2004.
