Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Hernia surgery. Surgeons performing a laparascopic (keyhole) repair of a bilateral inguinal hernia. A hernia is the protrusion of the intestines through a weak area in the abdominal muscles, here into the inguinal canal. Keyhole surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that is directed using a laparascope, a type of endoscope that is inserted through a small incision into the patient's abdomen. It sends an image of the area being operated on to a monitor (seen here) which the surgeon uses to guide the procedure.
