Caption: Electronic display of the decay of a Z particle, one of the carriers of the weak force. The event was recorded in the UA1 detector at CERN, the Eur- opean particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The display gives an outline of the UA1 detector in red. A proton & an antiproton, accelerated in CERN's SPS collider, have met in the centre of the detector & annihilated into pure energy. The energy rematerialises as a number of particles. One is the Z, which lives too briefly to be visible; but its existence can be deduced from the two muons (long white tracks) into which it decays. The other tracks are due to other particles produced in the original collision.
