Caption: Fungal mycelium. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fungal mycelium from the winter polypore fungus (Polyporus brumalis). The mycelium makes up the bulk of a fungus. Although, it is usually embedded in the substrate that the fungus is growing on and is therefore not seen. The mycelium consists of many microscopic branched filaments known as hyphae (threads). These are able to absorb nutrients that have been digested by extracellular enzymes. The fruiting bodies (mushrooms) of a fungus grow from the mycelium.
