Caption: Birch pollen grain, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The pollen grain of the birch tree (Betula) is highly allergic. It is transported by the wind, and so is light with a smooth, non-sticky surface to aid its dispersal over distances of thousands of kilometres. Pollen grains are reproductive structures produced by the male parts of flowering plants.
