Caption: Electronic display of a muon event in the IMB detector which approximates very closely to one type of predicted proton decay event. (For details of the detector & how to interpret this display, see descriptions of A142/156 & A142/159. ) In this two- hemisphere representation of the IMB tank, the muon event is seen to have produced two rings of light in each hemisphere, very similar to the simulated decay of a proton into a positron & a neutral pion shown in A142/186. The IMB physicists concluded, however, that this was not a proton decay event because (A) there was a signal showing a muon decay, (B) the total energy of the event was slightly too high, (C) the ring in the right- hand hemisphere is not quite centred, showing the event was not truly symmetrical.
