Caption: Electronic display of a cosmic ray muon event in the IMB proton decay detector, a giant tank of ultrapure water 600 metres down in a salt mine in Ohio. The event approximates closely to one type of predicted proton decay event. In this view of the cube-shaped tank, the muon event has produced two rings of light on the walls of the detector at centre & right. Phototubes lining the walls detect Cerenkov radiation from charged particles moving through the tank. The computer displays phototubes that have fired with stars; the more photons detected, the more bars in each star. The colours indicate the order in which the tubes fired - red are the earliest, purple the latest. (Event 35037) (5.9.82)
