Caption: Georgiy Sedov's grave. Grave of the Russian Arctic explorer Georgiy Yakovlevich Sedov (1857-1914). In 1912 Sedov led an independently funded sleigh expedition to the North Pole. The expedition reached Franz Josef Land in August 1913, however it had to stay for two winters in Tikhaya Bay due to lack of coal. On February 2nd 1914, Sedov and his accompanying seamen G. Linnik and A. Pustotniy set off from Tikhaya Bay for the North Pole with their draft dogs. However, Sedov died before reaching Rudolf Island. Photographed at Cape Auk, Tikhaya Bay, Franz Josef Land, Russia, in August 1971.
