Caption: Collecting radioactive ice for testing. American specialists collecting radioactive ice at the United States Air Force's Thule Air Base in Greenland. On January 21st 1968 a B-52 bomber, carrying nuclear bombs, crashed at the base. Thermonuclear reactions did not occur due to fail-safe mechanisms, but nuclear waste was released by the explosion. Photographed in January 1968.
