Caption: Soil melted into slag by a nuclear test. This soil was melted due to the extreme temperatures produced during a nuclear explosion on the Semipalatinsk Test Site in Kazakhstan. As it cooled it hardened into this rock-like slag. The Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) was the primary testing location for the Soviet Union's nuclear weapons. Photographed in Kazakhstan, in September 2001.
