Caption: Igor Petryanov-Sokolov (1907-1996), Soviet scientist. In 1945 Petryanov-Sokolov joined the USSR's atomic project. He worked on isotope separation and analysis and the production of heavy water. He studied the properties of radioactive aerosols and helped develop a jet system for collecting aerosol samples in atmospheric nuclear explosions. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in February 1969.
