Caption: David Jonathan Gross (born 1941), US physicist. Gross studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and then at the University of California, Berkeley, receiving his PhD in 1966. Gross works in the area of particle physics and string theory. It was in 1973, while working with a graduate student at Princeton University, that he made his major discovery, the concept of asymptotic freedom. This identified a property of quarks that was crucial to the development of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Gross, with others who made the same discovery, shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.Restrictions:
