Caption: Gout complications. Satirical artwork titled: 'The Burden of Wealth'. The overweight man being wheeled around in a chair is intended to illustrate the health problems associated with wealth, such as overeating and conditions such as gout. Gout is a metabolic condition where uric acid crystals are deposited in the joints, causing great pain, sometimes leading to infirmity and an inability to walk normally. This artwork, used in the chapter on gout, is from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
