Caption: Natural pesticide research. Entomologist comparing a healthy (left) Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) with ones that have been paralysed (right) after eating geranium plant extract. The phytochemicals in geraniums are known to be harmful to Japanese beetles, a major agricultural pest. This research is being done to identify the active phytochemicals and study the effects of them on the beetles, in the hope of creating a natural botanical formulation to control them.
