Caption: Coma patient's respirator. While in their coma, a respirator may be needed to maintain the patient's lung function, but it is removed if the patient's condition improves. This patient is being cared for at the Awakening Unit of the St John the Baptist Hospital, Rome, Italy. This unit, which opened in 1997, has advanced radiology and diagnostic equipment for assessing patients with head and brain injuries, and those in a coma. The medical staff specialise in rehabilitation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, aimed at helping patients to recover from their injuries.
