Caption: Neurological test for coma patient. Silhouette of brain electrodes being used to assess the brain function of a comatose patient. A coma is a deep state of unconsciousness, usually resulting from an injury to the brain. This patient is being cared for at the Awakening Unit of the St John the Baptist Hospital, Rome, Italy. This unit, which opened in 1997, has advanced radiology and diagnostic equipment for assessing patients with head and brain injuries, and those in a coma. The medical staff specialise in rehabilitation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, aimed at helping patients to recover from their injuries.
