Caption: Market stall. Women selling products on a market stall in Papua New Guinea. At lower centre are spear rolls (a local form of cigarette wrapped in newspaper), ordinary cigarettes, and local tobacco (in various forms). Betel nuts (lower right) are also being sold, halved with an accompanying paste and lime powder. Betel nuts, from the betel nut palm tree (Arecha catechu), are chewed for their intoxicating effect which is similar to alcohol. Tobacco is an addictive nicotine-containing drug. Photographed in Wewak, the capital of Papua New Guinea's East Sepik Province.
