Caption: Rodney James Baxter (born 1940), Australian physicist. Baxter was born in London, England, and studied at Cambridge University, but completed his PhD in 1964 at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, Australia. Following work elsewhere, he returned to the ANU in 1970 and held a position there until his retirement in 2002. His work has been in the area of statistical mechanics, and in ways to solve such problems. One such solution, partially named for him, is known as the Yang-Baxter equation. Baxter's awards include the Boltzmann Medal (1980) and the Dannie Heineman Prize (1987).Restrictions:
