Caption: C. V. Raman and Soviet physicists. From left to right, four of those present are: Soviet physicist Dmitrij Sergeevich Rozhdestvenskij (1876-1940), Soviet physicist Petr Ivanovich Lukirskii (1894-1954), Indian physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (at centre, 1888-1970), and Soviet-US physicist George Gamow (1904-1968). Rozhdestvenskij worked on optics in St Petersburg. Lukirskii worked on electron emission and scattering. Raman was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for similar work on what is now called Raman scattering. Gamow worked on quantum theory.
