Caption: Martin David Kruskal (1925-2006), US physicist. Kruskal studied at the University of Chicago and at New York University. His career was spent mostly at Princeton University, where he carried out theoretical research in plasma physics, as well as areas such as general relativity and nonlinear analysis. He retired from Princeton in 1989 and took up the David Hilbert Chair of Mathematics at Rutgers University. He is best known for his theory explaining properties of solitons, a type of solitary wave. His awards include the Dannie Heinemann Prize (1983) and the National Medal Of Science (1993). Photographed in September 1993.Restrictions:
