Caption: Edward Williams Morley (1838-1923), US physicist and chemist. Most of Morley's career was spent as Professor of Chemistry at Western Reserve College. His most famous work was with Michelson in their 1897 interferometry experiment attempting to detect the 'ether drift'. This failure to detect the supposed 'ether drift' related to the speed of light, and was explained by Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity (1905). Morley also worked with Miller on later interferometry experiments, attempting to disprove Einstein's theory. Morley's awards (for his work in chemistry) included the Davy Medal (1907).Restrictions:
