Caption: Giuseppe Paolo Stanislao Occhialini (1907-1993), Italian physicist. Occhialini studied in Florence. He then carried out research at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, as part of the team that confirmed the existence of the positron (1933). He then worked in Brazil and Italy, before returning to the UK to work at Bristol University. It was here that he was part of the discovery of the pion (pi-meson) in 1947. His later work on space physics included helping to found the European Space Agency (1975). Photographed in Italy in 1979, the year he received the Wolf Foundation Prize in Physics.Restrictions:
