Caption: Emericella nidulans fungus, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is the telemorphic (sexual reproductive stage) of the fungus Aspergillus nidulans. Telemorphic stages often have different names to the asexual stages. Seen here are fruiting bodies, or conidiophores. They are made up of chains of conidia (green), or spores, the reproductive cells of the fungus. A water repellent protein, hydrophobin, found on the exterior of the fruiting bodies has been successfully isolated and is now being produced on an industrial scale using biotechnology techniques. Magnification: x830 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
