Caption: Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937), New Zealand-born British physicist, holding a piece of equipment in Cambridge, England, circa 1919. It was in 1919 that Rutherford, already knighted (1914) and a Nobel laureate (Chemistry, 1908), was appointed Director of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University. During his time there, research included the discovery of the neutron (1932) and many other advances in particle physics, including the first artificially induced nuclear reaction (nuclear transmutation of nitrogen to oxygen). Rutherford was later raised to the peerage as Baron Rutherford of Nelson in 1931, and was buried in Westminster Abbey.Restrictions:
