Caption: Llewellyn Hilleth Thomas (1903-1992), British physicist. Thomas studied at Cambridge University, receiving his PhD in 1927. His main contributions were in the fields of atomic and quantum physics. From 1929, he worked in the USA, first at Ohio State University, and then, after World War II, at Columbia University. Named after him is the Thomas precession (1926), which concerns the interaction between an electron and the nucleus of an atom, and the Thomas-Fermi model (1927). This latter model was a precursor to the modern density functional theory (DFT) model used to simulate solid state physics and quantum chemistry.Restrictions:
