Caption: George Paget Thomson (1892-1975), British physicist. Thomson's best-known work is his classic 1927 experiment that inadvertently demonstrated electron diffraction. While at the University of Aberdeen, he passed a beam of electrons through a thin metal foil. The interference patterns provided important evidence of the wave-like properties of atomic particles (the wave-particle duality). Thomson shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physics with Davisson. Thomson, who was the son of the physicist J. J. Thomson, was knighted in 1943 and was chair of the MAUD Committee that started British work on the atomic bomb during World War II.Restrictions:.
