Caption: A-50 early-warning radar aeroplane, on display at an air show. A group of military personnel are standing on the aircraft, beneath the radar rotordome. The red star was the Russian air force insignia between 1991 and 2010. This is a Russian Beriev A-50 Shmel AWACS (airborne warning and control system) aircraft. It was developed in the 1970s and entered service in 1984. It uses radar to detect the location of enemy and friendly aircraft, allowing the direction of military air operations. Here, it is on display at the MAKS-2009 international air show in Zhukovsky, in Russia's Moscow region. Photographed on 23 August 2009.
