Caption: Maurice Loewy (1833-1907), French astronomer, in formal dress with medallions and other awards. Loewy was born in the Austrian Empire. He started work in astronomy at the Vienna Observatory, but took a position at the Paris Observatory in 1860. He became a French citizen in 1869, and fought in the Franco-Prussian War a year later. He was made a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1873, and was director of the Paris Observatory from 1896 to 1907. He worked with Pierre Puiseux on a major lunar atlas (published 1910). This image was published in volume 16 (1908) of the US magazine Popular Astronomy.
