Caption: Color-enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bacteria on a piece of smoked salmon that was left in a refrigerator long after the expiration of its shelf life. It was found to be unfit for human consumption. The muscle fibers were loosened and partially liquefied, and the piece had an unpleasant odor, all signs of bacterial spoilage. A small sample was fixed and prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which confirmed the presence of bacteria. Some may be observed immersed in the partially liquefied muscles. Image width: 25.6 micrometers. Magnification: 3,906x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
