Caption: Lake Eyre, Australia, April 22nd 2010. Satellite image showing Lake Eyre in the central Australian desert as water filled the usually dry salt lake after heavy rainfall in Queensland in January 2010. The lake's deepest point Belt Bay (outlined area at left) has filled and is beginning to overflow into the Madigan Gulf (outlined area at right). Lake Eyre, which is 15 metres below sea level, has an area of 9,500 square kilometres, but drains a much larger area of 1.2 million square kilometres. Image taken by the SPOT 5 satellite.
