Caption: Lake Eyre, Australia, May 8th 2010. Satellite image showing Lake Eyre in the central Australian desert as water filled the usually dry salt lake after heavy rainfall in Queensland in January 2010. Water has started to flow into the South Lake (bottom centre) from the flooded North Lake (centre). Lake Eyre, which is 15 metres below sea level, has an area of 9,500 square kilometres, but drains a much larger area of 1.2 million square kilometres. Image taken by the SPOT 5 satellite.
