Caption: Heart anatomy. Artwork showing the flow of blood through the heart. The heart is a hollow muscle that pumps blood around the body. Deoxygenated blood (blue arrows) from the body is carried into the right side of the heart (left) via the vena cava (top left). From here the blood travels into the lungs via the pulmonary artery (upper centre of heart), where it is oxygenated. The oxygenated blood (red) is then carried into the left side of the heart (right) before travelling back into the body via the aorta (arch at top of heart). In the body the blood exchanges oxygen for carbon dioxide and the cycle starts all over again. A cross section of the ventricles is shown at bottom right. They have thick walls to withstand the high pressures generated when pumping the blood.
