Caption: Sample from Soviet nuclear test. Radiation detector being used to monitor continuing radioactivity from a piece of rock from the Semipalatinsk testing ground, where the Soviet Union detonated its first nuclear bomb on 29 August 1949. This test was done 44 years later (in 1993), showing that the rock is still radioactive. This sample is kept in the museum of nuclear weapons in the Russian Federal Nuclear Centre in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region.
