Caption: Semipalatinsk nuclear reactor. This nuclear reactor is part of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan where the first Soviet nuclear tests took place in the 1940s. The site was closed in 1991, but this reactor, built by Soviet nuclear physicist Igor Kurchatov (1903-1960) is still functioning. Photographed in 2001.
