Caption: Aral Sea fishing fleet (on horizon), with sandbanks and seabirds in the middle distance and foreground. This area is near Moynoq, Uzbekistan, and was photographed in June 1973 before the recession of the Aral Sea left this area a dried-up seabed. The fishing industry here employed tens of thousands in the 1960s, but by the late 1970s the catch had declined as the drying up of the sea accelerated. Fishing as an industry had effectively ceased by the early 1980s.
