Caption: John Branner (1850-1922), American geologist. John Casper Branner was an American geologist and academic who in 1887 discovered the mineral Bauxite, from which aluminium is extracted. He was Chair of the Department of Botany and Geology at Indiana University, and President of the Indiana Academy of Science in 1889. In 1911 he went on to become President of the Seismological Society of America and was the second President of Stanford University 1913-1915. Photographed circa 1910-1915.
