Caption: Computer display of a "3+3" tau decay in the TASSO detector at the DESY particle physics laboratory, Hamburg. The display shows a cross-section through the detector. An electron & a positron accelerated in DESY's PETRA collider have met & annihilated at the centre of the detector, their energy material- ising as a tau particle & an antitau. The tau & antitau live too briefly to be visible themselves, but reveal their presence when each in turn decays into three charged pions & an invisible neutrino. One of the family of leptons, the tau is a heavy version of the electron & the muon.
