Caption: Pyotr Aleksandrovich Rebinder (1898-1972), Russian chemist. Rebinder was an expert in colloid chemistry, the physical chemistry of dispersed systems. He is remembered through the Rebinder Effect, a mechanism through which the strength of a solid is reduced by the adsorption of surfactant chemicals. His work formed the scientific basis of the modern understanding of many building materials such as cements. Photographed in 1968.
