Caption: Meteorite recovery. Researchers digging up fragments of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite. This was a meteorite that fell in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in Russia on 12 February 1947. The iron meteorite briefly appeared brighter than the Sun and left a smoke trail estimated as 36 km in length. At about 5.6 km altitude the meteorite exploded, the blast being heard up to 300 km away. Fragments of the meteorite covered an area of 1.6 square kilometres . Photographed during an expedition in 1965.
