Caption: Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova (b.1932), the first woman in space, seen with a group of fellow parachutists. Tereshkova is fourth from right. After Gagarin's successful spaceflight, it was decided that a woman would be added to the cosmonaut corps. Applications were invited for women parachutists aged under 30 years, less than 170cm tall and 70kg weight. Tereshkova was selected from over 400 entries. She flew on Vostok 6 on 16-9 June 1963. Photographed in April 1963.
