Caption: Ivan Lyudvigovich Knunyants (1906-1990), Armenian Soviet chemist. Knunyants was born at Shusha in the southern Caucasus and educated at Moscow. He graduated in 1928. He made over 200 inventions and discoveries in chemistry - an eclectic range of materials from nylon-6 and chemotherapy drugs through to chemical weapons. He won three Stalin Prizes, a Lenin prize and was made a Hero of Socialist Labour in 1966. Photographed in 1964.
