Caption: Roald Zinnurovich Sagdeev (b.1932), Russian physicist. Sagdeev was born and educated at Moscow. He worked at various Soviet research centres, specialising in plasma physics. In 1967 he became the youngest ever full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1973 to 1988 he was the director of the academy's Space Research Institute. In the late 1980s he became increasingly involved in politics and diplomacy, advising General Secretaries Andropov and Gorbachev on the scientific rationale behind nuclear arms reduction. Sine 1991 he has been a professor of physics at the University of Maryland, College Park. Photographed in 2005.
