Caption: Valentin Koptyug (1931-2001), Russian-Soviet chemist. Koptyug was director of the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry and a vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He served as president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and was awarded the Hammer and Sickle gold star, the highest non-military honour in the former Soviet Union.
