Caption: Sergei Vasilyevich Lebedev (1874-1934), Soviet chemist. Lebedev invented a method for producing an artificial rubber which is based on the polymerisation of butadiene. The process is catalysed by metallic sodium and was invented in 1910 but didn't go into full industrial production until 1930. By 1940 the Soviet Union was the world's largest producer of synthetic rubber. Photographed in 1922.
