Caption: Northern Lights gas pipeline building. Industrial building housing units (upper centre) of the Northern Lights gas pipeline. This pipeline was constructed in the 1960s and 1980s to take natural gas from Western Siberia to what is now Belarus. It is one of the main routes for Russian gas being transported to Europe. The pipeline is over 7000 kilometres in length, and compressor stations along the route help maintain the supplies. These units are located in the Jamalo-Nenetsky (Yamalo-Nenets) region of Russia, at the Western Siberia end of the pipeline. Photographed in 1974.
