Caption: Superhard materials research. Diamond cutting machinery at a Soviet institute for studying superhard materials. As the hardest known natural material, diamond is often used in industrial cutting machinery. This research took place in Kiev, Ukraine, at the Institute for Superhard materials. At the time, this institute was part of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences. Photographed in 1986.
